1. HISTORY & ORIGIN

The mantra “Om Shri Durgayai Namah” is a Vedic Shakta mantra dedicated to Goddess Durga, the Divine Mother who embodies Shakti, the cosmic feminine energy that sustains, protects, and transforms the universe. Scriptural Roots

  • Goddess Durga is glorified in several Puranas and Shakta texts, especially in the Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati or Chandi Path), part of the Markandeya Purana (around 400–600 CE).
  • In the Rig Veda, early hymns to Ambika, Aditi, and Vac laid the foundation for the later concept of Devi Durga — the mother of the universe.
  • The name Durga comes from the Sanskrit root “Durg”, meaning “fortress” or “that which is difficult to approach.” Hence, Durga is “the invincible one who removes difficulties and protects from all dangers.”

 Nature of the Goddess

Durga represents the combined energy of all deities — born from the collective radiance of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — to defeat the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the conquest of light over darkness and truth over ego.

Thus, this mantra is an invocation of divine protection, inner strength, and spiritual victory.
