  • Namaste is a common greeting in Indian culture and is often used at the beginning or end of a yoga practice. The word “Namaste” is derived from Sanskrit and is a combination of two words: “Nama” meaning “bow” and “Te” meaning “to you”.
  • When someone says “Namaste”, they are essentially bowing to the divine in the other person. It is a way of showing respect, gratitude, and recognition of the other person’s inner light and divinity.
  • In the context of a yoga class, it is often said by the teacher at the beginning and end of the class to acknowledge and honor the students and the practice they are about to undertake. The word can also be accompanied by a gesture called “anjali mudra,” which involves placing the palms together in front of the chest, symbolizing the coming together of the left and right sides of the body, as well as the connection between the individual and the divine.
