Introduction

In yogic philosophy and practice, prāṇa is regarded as the vital life force that sustains the body, mind, and consciousness. It flows through the subtle channels (nāḍīs) and governs all physiological and psychological functions. Etymological Meaning

Thus, Prāṇa Nigraha literally means the restraint or mastery of the vital energy through breath control.

Philosophical Understanding

According to the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali and the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā, the fluctuations of the mind (citta vṛtti) are closely linked with the fluctuations of prāṇa. An uncontrolled breath leads to a restless mind, while a restrained and disciplined breath calms the mind. Therefore, Prāṇa Nigraha becomes the gateway to dhāraṇā (concentration) and dhyāna (meditation).

The Bhagavad Gītā also refers to Prāṇa Nigraha when it speaks of yogis who regulate inhalation and exhalation to balance life forces and attain inner steadiness.

Practical Dimension

Prāṇa Nigraha is achieved through Prāṇāyāma, which consists of:

  1. Pūraka (Inhalation) – drawing in prāṇa.
  2. Kumbhaka (Retention) – holding or suspending prāṇa.
  3. Recaka (Exhalation) – releasing prāṇa.

By consciously regulating these three phases, the yogi gradually gains mastery over the breath, nervous system, and ultimately the mind.
