Online Sun Salutation Detoxification Series (Surya Namaskar Kriya)

  • This course provides an excellent ‘Mindful Movement Based Practice’ of stimulation and relaxation that brings about a balance within the stress and relaxation response of the human body (sympathetic/parasympathetic control).
  • Surya Namaskar is a perfect morning practice to awaken the body, focus the mind, and connect to a sense of gratitude for a new day! Surya Namaskar is a series of 12 poses to be performed as a continuous flow, synchronizing breath with mindful body movements.
  • The alternate expansion and contraction of the chest during Surya Namaskar postures helps in regulating and deepening respiration through the practice.
  • Movements done in synchronization with breathing during Surya Namaskar, result in conditioning the body, and calming down the mind.
  • Many people live a hectic lifestyle, and as a result they suffer from stress, depression, and other physical and mental illnesses.
  • Therapeutic Surya Namaskar is a wonderful Yoga technique that provides relief from such problems; and it also calms down the mind
  • For those of you who have limited mobility, injuries, or other conditions that prevent you from performing full Surya Namaskar, an excellent option is to try Chair Surya Namaskar.
  • You can still receive the benefits of Sun Salutation, performing the 12-Steps flow from a chair.
  • If standing is painful, difficult, or impossible, just attempt this chair variation of Surya Namaskar —and see how it will make you feel more grounded – balanced—and at ease in your body
  • There are many forms of the sequence, although in this course you will learn three of them. In the first Sun Salutation the whole sequence, which involves 12 asanas, is coordinated in a smooth flow, with attention given to correct breathing. Sun Salutation A and B are also demonstrated. They follow a similar sequence with variations. Upward Dog, 3 Leg Dog, Chaturanga and Warrior 1 are among the fascinating poses included in these variations.
  • The whole sequence emphasizes grace, works muscles and joints and focuses on reconnecting with the pattern of one’s breathing.
  • The sequence ends with the word Namaste which means ‘The light in me recognizes the light in you’. The spiritual dimension which underlies the exercise sequence is unmistakable but not strictly necessary for the exercises to be effective.

 Yoga – Sun Salutations Course

  • Surya Namaskar is the Sanskrit word which means ‘To salute the sun’.
  • This course will take you through a series of asanas, or poses, to create a graceful sequence of yoga positions.
  • This pattern of exercise is usually performed at sunrise or sunset in India. It is a perfect warm-up at the beginning of a Yoga session. The flow gives mobility to the whole body.
  • Salutations to the sun stretch and lengthen the joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Special attention is paid to the spine.
  • The arrangement is executed in quick succession and combined with breathing.
  • They are practiced with intensifying pace until the entire body has warmed up and is prepared for additional asana practice.
  • There are many forms of the sequence, although in this course you will learn three of them. In the first Sun Salutation the whole sequence, which involves 12 asanas, is coordinated in a smooth flow, with attention given to correct breathing.

Five Essential Aspects of Surya Namaskara

01. Asanas

There are 12 physical poses that correspond to the 12 phases of the sun in its annual movement. Its realization in a constant rhythmic sequence, reflects the rhythms of the universe; the twenty-four hours of the day, the twelve zodiacal phases of the year and the biorhythms of the body, aligning your geometry with that of the solar system.

02. Mantras

The vibration produced by chanting the Surya and Beeja mantras during practice has a very powerful and penetrating effect on the mind and body. Accelerating the healing of ailments, providing mental stability and self-control, and dissolving accumulated tensions.

03. Breathing

The entire sequence of movements and mantras of surya namaskara are synchronized with the breath, with phases of inhalation, exhalation, and retention. Without alignment between these elements, many of the potential benefits do not manifest.

04. Drishtis

They are the activation points of the body’s chakras. When the mind focuses on them during practice, the chakras are activated and release energy, elevating spiritual awareness and benefitting related physical structures as well.

05. Chakras

They are the psychic centers located in the subtle dimension of human beings, where energy channels (nadis) are interconnected. Its activation generates kundalini energy, key to the development and deepening of spiritual life.
