  1. History of “Hiraṇmayena Pātreṇa”
  • Scriptural Source:
Found in the Īśāvāsya Upaniṣad (verse 15) of the Śukla Yajurveda.
  • Context:
    • This mantra is traditionally recited as a prayer by a seeker at the end of life, requesting the Supreme to remove the veil of brilliance that covers the Absolute (Brahman) so that one may directly realize the truth.
    • It symbolizes the aspirant’s yearning to go beyond appearances, forms, and radiance to the pure essence of the Self.
  • Philosophical Foundation:
    • The “golden vessel” (hiraṇmaya pātra) represents the shining veil of māyā or cosmic brilliance (Sūrya) which, though divine, still conceals the ultimate reality.
    • The mantra expresses the Vedantic ideal that the ultimate truth (satya) lies beyond even the sun’s light — in the eternal Self.
