What is term Dorsiflexion, in asana movement?

  • Dorsiflexion in yoga refers to the movement of flexing the ankle joint, so that the top of the foot moves towards the shin. This movement is used in many yoga asanas (poses) to stretch and strengthen the muscles of the lower leg, including the calves, shins, and ankles.
  • For example, in a pose like downward-facing dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana), dorsiflexion is used to lift the heels off the ground and engage the muscles of the calves. This can help to strengthen the muscles of the lower legs, improve balance and stability, and stretch the hamstrings and back muscles.
  • In a pose like warrior I (Virabhadrasana I), dorsiflexion is used to lift the back heel off the ground and engage the muscles of the front foot. This can help to strengthen the muscles of the ankles, shins, and calves, and improve stability and balance in the pose.
