What is Bhastrika Pranayama?
- Bhastrika Pranayama is a type of yogic breathing exercise that involves rapid and forceful inhalation and exhalation. It is also known as “bellows breath” because the breath movements resemble the pumping action of a bellows.
- To practice Bhastrika Pranayama, sit comfortably with your back straight and take a few deep breaths to prepare. Then, begin the exercise by inhaling deeply through your nose and then forcefully exhaling through your nose. Repeat this cycle of deep inhalation and forceful exhalation rapidly and continuously for a set amount of time, usually 1-2 minutes.
- Bhastrika Pranayama is believed to have a variety of benefits, including:
- Stimulating and strengthening the respiratory system
- Increasing oxygen supply to the body and brain
- Boosting energy levels
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Improving digestion
- Purifying the blood and eliminating toxins
- Enhancing mental clarity and focus
- It is important to practice Bhastrika Pranayama under the guidance of a qualified yoga instructor, particularly if you have any respiratory or cardiovascular issues. This practice is not recommended for pregnant women or those with high blood pressure.
