What is Passive Stretching yoga?
- Passive stretching involves using external forces, such as gravity or a partner’s assistance, to stretch a muscle. In this type of stretching, the muscle being stretched is relaxed, and the stretch is held for an extended period of time.
- Passive stretching is commonly used in Hatha yoga, especially during the practice of Yin yoga. In Yin yoga, poses are held for several minutes to allow the muscles and connective tissues to slowly release and lengthen. Some examples of passive stretching poses in Yin yoga include Butterfly Pose (Baddha Konasana), Dragon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana), and Caterpillar Pose (Paschimottanasana).
- Passive stretching is beneficial for increasing flexibility, improving joint mobility, and reducing muscle tension. It can also help to increase circulation and promote relaxation. However, passive stretching should be approached with caution, as it can lead to overstretching and injury if not done properly. It is important to avoid forcing the body into a stretch and to listen to the body’s limits. Additionally, those with certain conditions, such as joint injuries or chronic pain, may need to modify or avoid passive stretching poses altogether.
