Prāṇic Body (Prāṇamaya Kośa)

Introduction

According to yogic principles, the human is not restricted to the tangible bulk (sthūla śarīra). We are a collection of five sheaths or coatings, famous as the pañcha kośas (five sheaths), illustrated in the Taittirīya Upaniṣad. One of these is the prāṇamaya kośa, as known or named at another time or place, the prāṇic frame. It is subtler than the tangible corpse but denser than the insane and otherworldly coatings. The prāṇic bulk acts as the hypothetical force covering that experiences existence and links the material accompanying the mind and higher knowledge.

Etymological Meaning

  • Prāṇa—hypothetical evolutionary force, hypothetical force, respiration.
  • Maya—calm off, amounting to.
  • Kośa – covering, tier, top.

Thus, the Prāṇamaya Kośa method is the “covering make sense of prāṇa” or the “hypothetical force body.”

Nature of the Prāṇic Body

  • It is the forceful plan of the material.
  • Composed of prāṇa (hypothetical evolutionary force) that flows through chiliads of delicate channels named nāḍīs.
  • Governed by chakras (strength centers) that manage the allocation of prāṇa.
  • Functions as a bridge between the material party (annamaya kośa) and the mind (manomaya kośa).

Functions of the Prāṇic Body

  1. Vitalization—Provides strength for all material and insane functions.
  2. Coordination – Synchronizes corpse orders (breathing, distribution, digesting, etc.).
  3. Protection—Acts as a shield, asserting energy and immunity.
  4. Communication – Serves as the medium by which mind influences frame and with the order reversed.
  5. Spiritual Channel – Transmits bigger states of knowledge through freed nāḍīs.

Types of Prāṇa in the Prāṇic Body

The prāṇic crowd consists of five big prāṇas (pañcha prāṇa vāyus):

  1. Prāṇa – Governs breathing, essence, and alveoli.
  2. Apāna – Governs removal, earthward flow of strength.
  3. Samāna – Governs digestion and absorption.
  4. Udāna—Governs talk, progress, and upward flow of strength.
  5. Vyāna – Governs distribution and overall arrangement.

Influence on Health and Mind

  • When prāṇa flows freely → fitness, spirit, clearness, joy.
  • When prāṇa is obstructed → ailment, fatigue, discontent, despair.
  • Modern learning compares this to the biography-strength field or magnetic field of currents about the material.

Ways to Strengthen the Prāṇic Body

  1. Prāṇāyāma—Breath control to manage prāṇa.
  2. Āsana – Physical postures to open strength channels.
  3. Mudrā and Bandha – Energy locks to direct prāṇa.
  4. Meditation and Mantra – Harmonizes shakings of strength.
  5. Sattvic Lifestyle – Diet, sleep, and moral living continue prana.
  6. Nature Connection – Sunlight, nature, and water revitalize prāṇa.

Conclusion
