Prāṇa and Citta
Introduction
In yogic knowledge, two fundamental ideas that demonstrate the connection between physique, mind, and knowledge are Prāṇa and Citta. Prāṇa is the alive life force that endures in all living beings, while Citta is the mind-stuff or the field of knowledge at which point ideas, sentiments, and feelings stand. Yoga views the interplay between two points, Prāṇa and Citta, as the key to understanding human knowledge and attaining freedom (mokṣa).
Meaning of Prāṇa
- The word “Prāṇa” arises from the root “an” (to sigh, to live) accompanying the title “pra” (forth, essential).
- Prāṇa refers not only to respite but also to the entire growth strength that animates the body, senses, and mind.
- In the individual, prāṇa flows through the nāḍīs (channeling channels) and rules five important functions, named the pañca prāṇas:
- Prāṇa-vāyu – private mobile strength (breathing, consumption).
- Apāna-vāyu – downward affecting strength (removal).
- Samāna-vāyu—weigh strength (digesting, absorption).
- Udāna-vāyu—upward exciting strength (talk, development, otherworldly climb).
- Vyāna-vāyu – flowing strength (distribution, movement).
Prāṇa is so the bridge betwixt the material and the mind.
Meaning of Citta
- Citta arises from the root “cit” (to see, to see, expected intentional).
- Citta is the mind-stuff or the total field of knowledge, containing concepts, sentiments, thoughts, and feelings (saṁskāras).
- According to Yoga Sūtra I.2: “Yogaś citta vṛtti nirodhaḥ”—Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind-stuff.
- Citta is calm in three working facets:
- Manas—the neurological, interrogative mind.
- Buddhi—the genius or discriminating ability.
- Ahaṁkāra—the sense of personality or personality.
Relationship Between Prāṇa and Citta
Yoga knowledge stresses that Prāṇa and Citta are intensely related:
- Mutual Dependence
o When prāṇa is agitated, the mind becomes restless.
o When citta is disturbed, the break enhances unevenness.
- Mirror Effect
“O, breath” indicates the United States of America in agreement: calm whiff displays calm citiy, while ignorant or expeditious suggestions display insane mixing.
- Control Pathways
o By controlling prāṇa through prāṇāyāma, an individual can influence and calm the vacillations of citta.
o By disciplining the citta through contemplation, prāṇa generally enhances equality and balance.
- Energy–Consciousness Link
o Prāṇa is the cab of strength, while citta is the car of knowledge.
o Together, they generate human knowledge and decide spiritual progress.
Yogic Application
- Prāṇāyāma: Regulates prāṇa to calm the mind.
- Pratyāhāra and Dhāraṇā: Withdraws and focuses citta for integration.
- Meditation (Dhyāna): Harmonizes prāṇa and citta, superior to silence.
- Samādhi: When two together, prāṇa and citta, are stilled, the ascetic knowledge joins, accompanying the Self (ātman).
Conclusion
Prāṇa and Citta are integral ranges of human life. Prāṇa shows the flow of hypothetical force, while Citta shows the field of knowledge. The two influence each one constantly: confused prāṇa agitates the mind, and edgy citta disrupts the respite. Yoga educates that expertise of the individual leads to expertise of the different. By harmonizing Prāṇa through Prāṇāyāma and stilling Citta through contemplation, the expert surpasses two together, strength and mind, and achieves harmony, balance, and spiritual achievement.
