Nāḍīs (energy channels)

Introduction

In yogic wisdom, nāḍīs are nice strength channels by which prāṇa (hypothetical evolutionary force) flows in the frame. While the material body has channels and irritation, the clever carcass has chiliads of nāḍīs that transport strength, knowledge, and spirit. The word “nāḍī” emanates from Sanskrit, meaning “hose, flow, or passage,” stressing their role as pathways for prāṇa.

Number and Importance of Nāḍīs

  • Classical texts like the Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā and Gheranda Samhitā detail 72,000 nāḍīs, though few texts mention 350,000.
  • Among these, three are basic:
  1. Idā—abandoned-side channel, moony, abating, appeasing, insane functions.
  2. Piṅgalā – right-side channel, cosmic, warming, activating, material functions.
  3. Suṣumṇā – main channel, runs along the vertebral column, guides otherworldly animation.
  • The balance of prāṇa in these three channels is important for material, insane, and otherworldly energy.

Functions of Nāḍīs

  1. Transport Prāṇa

o Carry history’s strength to each subtle, indiscriminate carcass.

o Maintain energy and arrangement between carcass and mind.

  1. Connect Chakras

o Serve as pathways connecting the seven bigger chakras from Mūlādhāra to Sahasrāra.

o Allow the upward flow of Kuṇḍalinī strength.

  1. Balance Energies

o Idā and Piṅgalā balance chilling and warming, yin and yang, and insane and material strengths.

o Suṣumṇā mediates and harmonizes these strengths for larger knowledge.

  1. Purification and Healing

o Blockages in nāḍīs can bring about material, insane, and sensitive imbalances.

o Prāṇāyāma, bandhas, and contemplation help free and clear nāḍīs, replacing unity.

Techniques to Activate and Balance Nāḍīs

  • Nāḍī Śuddhi (Alternate Nostril Breathing) – cleanses and balances Idā and Piṅgalā.
  • Kumbhaka (Breath Retention) – reinforces prāṇa flow through Suṣumṇā.
  • Kuṇḍalinī Awakening Practices – stimulate upward flow through Suṣumṇā.
  • Bandhas (Locks)—organize prāṇa shift and eliminate strength inactivity.

Spiritual Significance

  • Suṣumṇā is deliberately the road to freedom (mokṣa).
  • When prāṇa rises through Suṣumṇā, it leads to dhyāna (contemplation) and samādhi (cause accompanying knowledge).
  • The kindling of Kuṇḍalinī energy depends on the cleansing of nāḍīs.

Conclusion

Nāḍīs are the delicate passages of prāṇa, lively for material well-being, insane clearness, and religious arousal. Among millennia of nāḍīs, Idā, Piṅgalā, and Suṣumṇā are basic, commanding the flow of energy and knowledge. Practices like prāṇāyāma, contemplation, and bandhas free these channels, match strengths, and form the expert for taller states of knowledge.
