Physiology of Kumbhaka

Introduction

Kumbhaka, or whiff memory, is the main element of prāṇāyāma. While breathing (pūraka) and breath (recaka) move air completely out of the alveoli, kumbhaka creates a pause that deeply influences the heart, central nervous system, and mind. From a corporal standpoint, Kumbhaka modifies respiring smoke, unrestrained political reactions, and brain function—bringing balance in the middle from two points, the crowd and the mind.

  • During kumbhaka, the respiring influences (pills, intercostals) remain weakened in antar kumbhaka (afterwards breathing) or loose in bāhya kumbhaka (after breath).

  • Breath memory utilizes gentle pressure on thoracic and intestinal tools, exciting glands like the adrenals, organ meat, and thyroid.
