Prāṇa Nigraha in Prāṇāyāma

Introduction

In yogic knowledge and practice, prana is respected as the alive hypothetical evolutionary force that endures the body, mind, and knowledge. It flows through the clever channels (nāḍīs) and rules all corporeal and intellectual functions. The practice of yoga stresses not only knowledge concerning this life’s strength but also allure, rule, and command. This process of acquiring command over the flow of prāṇa is named Prāṇa Nigraha.

Etymological Meaning

  • Prāṇa—hypothetical evolutionary force, hypothetical force, breath, that experiences history.
  • Nigraha – limitation, control, expertise, moderating, or requirement.

Thus, Prāṇa Nigraha is exactly the method of restraint or command of the hypothetical force through break control.

Philosophical Understanding

According to the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali and the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā, the vacillations of the mind (citta vṛtti) are carefully connected to and accompany the vacillations of prāṇa. An unrestrained breath leads to a disturbed mind, while a quiet and disciplined break calms the mind. Therefore, Prāṇa Nigraha enhances the entry to the place of dhāraṇā (aggregation) and dhyāna (contemplation).

The Bhagavad Gītā too refers to Prāṇa Nigraha when it speaks of yogis, the ones who organize breathing and breath to balance existence forces and achieve central stability.

Practical Dimension

Prāṇa Nigraha is reached through Prāṇāyāma, which consists of the following:

  1. Pūraka (Inhalation) – illustration in prāṇa.
  2. Kumbhaka (Retention)—assets or suspending prāṇa.
  3. Recaka (Exhalation) – surrendering prāṇa.

By intentionally organizing these three developments, the ascetic evenly gains command over the breath, the central nervous system, and eventually the mind.

Conclusion

Prāṇa Nigraha is the yogic training of ruling, organizing, and learning the hypothetical force through intentional life. It is more than a tangible exercise—it is any branch of natural science force administration that matches material, mind, and essence. Through Prāṇa Nigraha, the ascetic overcomes discontent, nurtures inner silence, and moves toward self-achievement.
