What is Manomaya kosha – mind sheath

  • Manomaya Kosha is the third of the five sheaths or layers of the human being, according to Vedantic philosophy. The term “Manomaya” means “made of the mind” in Sanskrit, indicating that this sheath is associated with the mental and emotional aspects of our being.
  • The Manomaya Kosha is the mental sheath of the human being, and it includes the mind, the five senses, and their organs. It is responsible for our thoughts, emotions, memories, and perceptions of the world around us.
  • This sheath is the foundation for our cognitive and emotional experiences, as well as our sense of identity and individuality. It is intimately connected to our sense of self, and it shapes our understanding of who we are and how we relate to the world.
  • However, the Manomaya Kosha is also considered to be a limited aspect of our being, as it represents only the mental and emotional aspects of our existence. The other four sheaths are the Annamaya Kosha (food sheath), Pranamaya Kosha (breath sheath), Vijnanamaya Kosha (intellectual sheath), and Anandamaya Kosha (bliss sheath).
  • According to Vedantic philosophy, the ultimate goal of human life is to realize the true nature of the Self, which is beyond the five sheaths. This can be achieved through spiritual practices such as meditation and self-inquiry, which help to transcend the limitations of the Manomaya Kosha and realize the deeper aspects of our being.
