How to Sit for Meditation and Pranayama

  • Sitting for meditation and pranayama requires proper posture and alignment to help you stay focused and relaxed during your practice. Here are some steps to follow:
  • Choose a quiet and comfortable place: Find a quiet spot in your home or outside where you can sit undisturbed. Choose a place where you can sit comfortably for the duration of your practice.
  • Sit in a cross-legged position: Cross your legs and place your feet on the floor. If sitting cross-legged is uncomfortable, you can sit on a cushion or folded blanket to elevate your hips.
  • Straighten your spine: Lengthen your spine and sit tall, making sure your back is straight. Imagine a string pulling you up from the top of your head.
  • Rest your hands: Place your hands on your knees, palms facing down or up, whichever feels more comfortable.
  • Relax your shoulders: Release any tension in your shoulders and allow them to drop down away from your ears.
  • Close your eyes: Close your eyes to help you turn inward and focus on your breath.
  • Breathe deeply: Take a few deep breaths to relax your body and settle your mind.
  • Begin your practice: Start your meditation or pranayama practice and focus on your breath, mantra, or visualization.
  • Remember, it’s important to listen to your body and adjust your posture as needed. Over time, you will develop greater flexibility and endurance, allowing you to sit for longer periods of time with greater ease.
