Explain term Elevation, in asana movement?

  • In yoga, elevation refers to the movement of lifting a body part towards the ceiling or away from the ground. This movement can be used in many different asanas (poses) to strengthen and engage various muscle groups in the body.
  • For example, in a seated forward bend such as Paschimottanasana, the movement of elevating the chest towards the ceiling helps to lengthen the spine and create space between the vertebrae. This can also help to engage the muscles of the upper back and shoulders, creating stability and strength in the upper body.
  • In a pose like upward-facing dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana), elevation is used to lift the chest and upper body away from the ground, while engaging the muscles of the back, shoulders, and arms. This pose can help to strengthen the muscles of the upper body and improve posture and alignment.
  • In inversions like headstand (Sirsasana), elevation is used to lift the legs and hips towards the ceiling, while engaging the muscles of the core and legs to maintain balance and stability.
