Candlelight insight, also known as Trataka, is a form of meditation that involves focusing the eyes on a candle flame. It is an ancient practice from the Hatha Yoga tradition and is believed to promote concentration, calmness, and inner peace.
The technique for practicing Trataka is as follows:
- Sit in a comfortable seated position with your spine straight and your eyes closed.
- Place a candle at eye level, about an arm’s length away from you.
- Light the candle and gaze at the flame without blinking for as long as you can.
- When your eyes become tired or start to water, close them and visualize the flame in your mind’s eye.
- When you can no longer hold the image in your mind, open your eyes and repeat the process.
- It is recommended to practice Trataka for 5-10 minutes at a time, gradually increasing the duration over time.
Benefits: Trataka include increased concentration, improved memory, reduced stress and anxiety, improved eyesight, and increased spiritual awareness.
However, there are some contraindications to practicing Trataka. Those with eye diseases or conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts should not practice Trataka. Also, those with a history of seizures or epilepsy should avoid this practice.
Anatomy and Physiology
From an anatomy and physiology perspective, Trataka is believed to stimulate the pineal gland, located in the center of the brain. This gland is responsible for producing melatonin, which regulates sleep and wakefulness. By focusing the eyes on the candle flame, Trataka is believed to activate the pineal gland and promote relaxation and inner peace.
